ISR Swim Safety Lessons

Expert ISR Swim Survival Lessons for Infants and Young Children in Los Angeles, California.

What is ISR?

Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) is a highly specialized method of teaching young children how to survive in water.

The program is designed to teach infants as young as 6 months how to float on their backs, and children up to 6 years old how to swim-float-swim to safety.

ISR has been developed and refined over decades, with a proven track record of saving lives.

What’s the difference between ISR and traditional swim lessons?

Unlike traditional swim lessons that focus on recreational swimming skills, ISR teaches infants and young children how to survive in water. The program emphasizes floating and swim-float-swim sequences—life-saving skills proven to help children survive accidental falls into water.

Little Lifesavers Lessons Focus on Age-Appropriate Skills:

Infants and Toddlers

Infants learn to hold their breath underwater, turn onto their backs, and float until help arrives.

Little Kids

Older children learn a swim-float-swim sequence that allows them to get to safety if they accidentally fall into the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 10-minute lesson duration is designed to align with young children’s attention spans and physical abilities. Short, frequent lessons help build muscle memory and ensure that the skills are deeply ingrained.

The eight-week duration provides the necessary time for your child to consistently practice and master these life-saving skills. The daily repetition helps reinforce the techniques and builds confidence.

Yes, ISR is a safe and proven method with a track record of saving lives. Michelle Sauer, our instructor, is certified in the ISR method and in first aid and CPR, ensuring that your child’s safety is the top priority during every lesson.

The goal of ISR is to teach survival skills, not necessarily traditional swimming. Infants and Toddlers will learn Rollback to Float. Most young children do learn basic swimming skills during the eight-week program, with the emphasis on Swim-Float-Swim survival techniques. We also offer 2 week refresher lessons to maintain your child’s ISR Self-Rescue® skills.

Every child is different! While some children may initially feel anxious, ISR instructors are trained to provide a supportive and compassionate learning environment. Over time, most children become more confident and comfortable with the lessons – and that confidence is key in water emergencies.

It’s completely normal for some children to feel anxious and cry during the first few lessons. They’re in a new environment, with a new person, its natural for them to feel cautious. Our goal is to help your child build trust with their instructor and, over time, with the water itself. By the end of the first week, many kids are eager to come back to lessons!

Remember, fear is something we learn. We aren’t born afraid of things like bugs, water, or animals. Fear develops when someone has a negative experience involving that particular fear. Your child will only develop a real fear of the water if they’ve had a traumatic experience or witnessed something distressing in an aquatic setting.

The ISR program is designed to teach survival skills in just eight weeks, with 10-minute lessons five days a week. However, each child is unique, and some may require additional time to fully master the techniques.

An important distinction between ISR and other programs is our emphasis on safety before, during and after lessons. Prior to beginning lessons, your child’s unique medical history is reviewed by a team of medical professionals to identify any potential health issues that may affect your child’s lessons and safety.
